Baldur’s Gate 3

One of the world’s most anticipated game releases will happen in 2020. The long-standing success of the Baldur’s Gate series will have yet another sequel- Baldurs Gate 3!

It is the creators of Divinity, Larian Studios, that have been given the heavy burden to carry this game to the finish line, while, at the same time, please an audience that is in love with the title.

With three hours of gameplay revealed we think they are on to something quite interesting.

Baldurs Gate 3

A new version of Baldurs Gate

There have been many expectations of how the game will look. Especially if you have played the old Infinity Engine games.

Larian’s version of Baldur’s Gate 3 looks nothing like it did before. Instead, they have taken a lot of inspiration from their earlier masterpiece Divinity: Original Sin 2. But, Baldur’s Gate 3 is based on the Dungeon & Dragons rule book, just like the earlier versions.

Storyline

We have now seen a trailer from last year and in late February we saw 3 hours of gameplay and FAQs. From that, some conclusions can be made.

Mind Flayers will be the main enemy in Baldur’s Gate 3 as is clearly shown in the trailer above.

And even if it was over 100 years since the last events in Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, there are people that still remember the agony from the Bhaalspawn era. At least some. Therefore, it can be expected that some flashbacks to the earlier stories will happen. And also this time the crew will make it to Baldurs Gate and who knows what will happen there.

Remember your origin – Origin Stories

One of the things we liked the best with Divinity: Original Sin 2 was the deep background stories on all characters, so-called Origin Stories. This is a welcomed addition to Baldur’s Gate 3 we think, as in many RPG games you are just starting from scratch and develop your character.

In Baldur’s Gate 3 the background stories and skills will have an overall impact on the game and how different scenarios play out. At the showcase of the game, the producers played a noble elf called Astarion, that also is a vampire.

As Astarion is a vampire, certain things need to be considered in the game. For instance, Astarion cannot enter moving water and needs to be invited into peoples homes before entering them.

All in all the Origin Story is a very nice addition to Baldur’s Gate 3 as it gives more a feeling of real roleplaying, as you start with some predetermined sets of skills both physically and mentally.

Baldur’s Gate 3 summary

When Larian confirmed the BaldursGate3 title last year we thought that they were one of few studios in the world that could take on a high-risk project like that.

As game developers and studios need to work hard to get respect from the gamer community and the fans, Larian came in with strong confidence. With Original Sin 2 being loved all across the gamer community, we think they felt, very strongly, that they could make Baldurs Gate 3 a top game of 2020. If not Larian will make it, who would?

BaldursGate 3 will be released as “early access” later in 2020 and have been confirmed for PC and Google Stadia, but we expect more devices to follow.
